The Free Cities were colonies of the Valyrian Freehold. When the Doom of Valyria destroyed the Freehold, the cities achieved independence. Braavos was founded differently — by escaped slaves who hid in a foggy lagoon. The Iron Bank of Braavos has shaped the politics of both Essos and Westeros through its lending.
Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. Varies by city — Braavos is foggy, Volantis is subtropical.
