15 regions found
House Stark · “Winter is Coming”
The largest and most sparsely populated region of Westeros, spanning from the Neck to the Wall. A land of ancient godswoods, frozen rivers, and proud people who remember the old ways.
Cold and harsh winters lasting years, brief cool summers. Snow covers much of the land year-round. The further north, the harsher the conditions.
Northern culture values honor, loyalty, and the Old Gods above the Faith of the Seven. They keep the old ways, maintain direwolf as their symbol, and remember the Long Night.
House Greyjoy · “We Do Not Sow”
A harsh archipelago of nine main islands in the Iron Sea. Home to the ironborn — fierce raiders who built an empire through the sea before being conquered by the Targaryens.
Cold, wet, and windswept. Rocky shores lashed by the Iron Sea. Minimal arable land.
The ironborn follow the Drowned God and live by the "Old Way" — reaving, raiding, and paying the iron price (taking rather than buying). Salt wives and thralls are common. They are fierce seafarers who despise weakness.
House Tully · “Family, Duty, Honor”
The heartland of Westeros, crisscrossed by the Trident, the Blue Fork, the Red Fork, and the Green Fork. Fertile but endlessly fought over due to its strategic position.
Temperate with fertile soil and abundant rainfall. Mild winters and warm summers. Rivers provide year-round water.
A crossroads culture influenced by all surrounding regions. Known for resilience despite being the most frequently contested land in Westeros. Honor and family loyalty above all.
House Arryn · “As High as Honor”
A mountainous region naturally fortified by the Mountains of the Moon. The high road through the passes is treacherous, and the Eyrie is considered impregnable. The fertile Vale proper sits between the mountains and the Bay of Crabs.
Moderate climate protected by the Mountains of the Moon. Cold winters in the highlands, temperate valleys. Snowed in during winter.
Proud and chivalrous, the Vale maintains strong traditions of knighthood and honor. Fiercely independent — the Vale remained neutral during the War of Five Kings. Mountain clans inhabit the passes.
House Lannister · “Hear Me Roar”
The wealthiest region of Westeros, blessed with vast gold and silver mines beneath the hills. Home to Casterly Rock, carved into a massive stone promontory overlooking the Sunset Sea.
Mild and temperate with rocky terrain. Rich mineral deposits beneath rolling hills and mountains.
Wealthy and sophisticated, shaped by centuries of gold mine profits. Known for political cunning, opulence, and ruthless pragmatism. "A Lannister always pays his debts."
House Tyrell · “Growing Strong”
The most fertile and populous region of Westeros. Rolling hills, vast wheat fields, vineyards, and manicured gardens characterize this land of plenty that feeds the realm.
Warm and fertile. Long growing seasons with gentle rains. Mild winters. The breadbasket of Westeros.
Cultured and refined — the Reach values music, jousting, art, and chivalry above all other regions. Home to the Citadel, the center of learning in Westeros. Most populous and cultivated region.
House Targaryen (formerly) / The Iron Throne · “Fire and Blood”
The seat of royal power in Westeros. King's Landing, the largest city in the realm, sits on the northern shore of Blackwater Bay at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush. Dragonstone, ancestral Targaryen seat, sits offshore.
Temperate coastal climate along Blackwater Bay. Mild winters and warm summers.
A melting pot of all Westerosi cultures, shaped by its role as the seat of royal power. Trade and political intrigue define life here more than regional identity.
House Baratheon · “Ours is the Fury”
A region of steep mountains, dense forests, and rocky coasts battered by storms. Storm's End, the ancestral Baratheon seat, has never been taken by storm or siege in its long history.
Stormy and tempestuous, with fierce autumn and winter storms sweeping in from Shipbreaker Bay. Dense forests and rocky coastline.
Hardy and martial, shaped by constant storms and warfare. Known for producing fierce warriors, skilled sailors, and stubborn lords. They value toughness above refinement.
House Martell · “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”
The southernmost region, the last to join the Seven Kingdoms (by marriage rather than conquest). A land of scorching deserts, dry rivers called "sandstone," and proud people with Rhoynish blood.
Hot and arid with desert terrain in the deep south (the Dornish Marches). Red Mountains separate it from the rest of Westeros. Scorching summers, mild winters.
Unique Rhoynish-influenced culture brought by the Rhoynar migration under Nymeria. More liberal customs including equal inheritance regardless of gender. Renowned for spiced food, poisons, and passionate temperament.
None (Free Folk under various Kings-beyond-the-Wall) · “We Do Not Kneel”
The vast frozen wilderness beyond the Wall. Home to the Free Folk, giants, mammoths, and ancient terrors. A land of perpetual winter and forgotten magic where the Children of the Forest once dwelled.
Frozen and inhospitable. Perpetual winter in the far north. Even summers are brief and cold. The Lands of Always Winter at the uttermost north never thaw.
The Free Folk (wildlings) live by their own laws, rejecting bending the knee to any lord or king. Tribal, fiercely independent, but united by necessity against the cold and the Others.
Various (Magisters, Sealords, Princes) · “Valar Morghulis (All Men Must Die)”
Nine powerful independent city-states: Braavos, Pentos, Volantis, Norvos, Qohor, Myr, Lys, Tyrosh, and Lorath. Each a center of trade, culture, and wealth.
Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. Varies by city — Braavos is foggy, Volantis is subtropical.
Nine independent city-states each with distinct culture descended from the Valyrian Freehold. Centers of trade, banking, art, and intrigue. No kings — governed by magisters, sealords, and princes.
Great Masters (Meereen), Good Masters (Astapor), Wise Masters (Yunkai) · “Tradition and Mastery”
Three great slave cities on the coast of a sheltered bay. Astapor trained the Unsullied, Yunkai bred pleasure slaves, and Meereen was the greatest city. Transformed by Daenerys Targaryen's conquest.
Hot and arid coastal climate. Sea breezes moderate the heat in coastal cities.
Built on millennia of slavery. Ancient Ghiscari heritage mixed with Valyrian influence. Pyramid-based architecture, fighting pits, and rigid social hierarchy defined by slave ownership.
Various Khalasars (Great Khal Drogo was the mightiest) · “It is Known”
Endless grasslands stretching from the Free Cities to the distant east. Roamed by the Dothraki khalasars — horse-mounted raiders who have never been defeated in open battle on the grass.
Vast temperate grasslands — the Dothraki Sea — with hot summers. Occasional cold winters on the fringes.
Nomadic horse-lords who roam the endless grasslands. Warrior culture centered on mounted combat, raiding, and conquest. Strength is everything. Women who can fight are called "blood of my blood."
The Pureborn and the Thirteen · “The Greatest City”
A great trading port at the crossroads of the known world, where the Summer Sea meets the Jade Sea. Ancient, wealthy, and mysterious — home to warlocks, merchants, and shadow magic.
Hot and arid. Sits on the coast of the Summer Sea near the Straits of Qarth.
An ancient city of immense wealth, called "the greatest city that ever was or will be" by its inhabitants. Ruled by the Pureborn (ancient nobility), the Thirteen (merchant guilds), and the Warlocks of Qarth.
Village elders (no central authority) · “Peace and Harvest”
A region of fertile valleys beyond the Dothraki Sea. Home to the Lhazareen people — farmers and herders who have suffered centuries of Dothraki raids.
Fertile valleys and gentle hills beyond the Dothraki Sea.
Peaceful farming people called "Lamb Men" by the Dothraki. They grow crops and raise sheep rather than wage war. Gentle culture, deeply spiritual, historically victimized by Dothraki raids.
