A harsh archipelago of nine main islands in the Iron Sea. Home to the ironborn — fierce raiders who built an empire through the sea before being conquered by the Targaryens.
The ironborn once ruled much of the Riverlands and Western coast. Harren the Black built the massive Harrenhal before being burned alive by Aegon I. The Greyjoys rose to lead the islands but twice rebelled against the Iron Throne — Balon Greyjoy's first rebellion was crushed by Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark.
Cold, wet, and windswept. Rocky shores lashed by the Iron Sea. Minimal arable land.
The ironborn follow the Drowned God and live by the "Old Way" — reaving, raiding, and paying the iron price (taking rather than buying). Salt wives and thralls are common. They are fierce seafarers who despise weakness.
Renowned fleet of longships. Can muster strong naval forces but limited land armies.
